The Scent of Angels January 16, 2007

I had the most amazing day of meetings today, a lot of really strange things happen that were just to random to be coincidence.
1st I had my usual 10 with Mike and we discussed my projects and what I needed to do to get to the next stage before our next meeting. However there was still this very mechanical literal sense to the project that just didn’t feel right. Mike then introduced me to Michael Punt who has studied angels along with Martha my dissertation tutor from the 1st term. I arranged a meeting with them for later that day to discuss my idea further. I then thought back to an article that had sparked my initial interest in the field of scent, the odour of sanctity which I read when I began my dissertation.
During my meeting with Martha and Micheal Punt we were discussing some amazing ideas and developements for my project.
The most important thing for this project to work with the subtly I require is to hide the technology involved.
1) The angels only appear when you call on them, so some people believe. Therefore I could hide the technology and have the people text the angel and have the prayers displayed on a screen. When the text is received by the hidden phone then the scent emitter would trigger.

2)Have an abstract painting of an angel like the ones martha showed me which display lights and auras which are angels captured on film rather than the traditional angel with wings. There could be a pressure plate on the floor so as people stand in the presence of this image the scent is released.

3)This was an amazing idea involving GPS & natural scent, I would go round the city tracking the angels of Plymouth and recording the co-ordinates, times and weather they appeared in and map it on a 3D map of Plymouth. I could even produce an audio or visual representation that people could use to go to these places themselves.

4)The final idea is another way of visualising my idea. People have claimed to be able to smell the Aurora Borealis (Northern lights) and it is another natural phenomenon involving unseen source so it could be a good representation of my angel.

I talked to Patricia from the perfumery course but unfortunately it only runs as a distance learning thing but she did email me a lot of information and has invited me to a workshop masterclass on the 19th March which would be amazing to go to and help to add another level to my understanding of scent.

I am picking up more material from Martha tomorrow so I can develop my ideas further.

After my meeting with Mike on Tuesday I have been looking at text and doing word replacement to help with broading my project. I have also gathered my resources together to allow me to produce the mobile phone scent experiment which will be the starting block of my project. I hope to go to the electronics lab this tuesday and talk it through with the guys up there. I will post up the results of that meeting next tuesday

Sound Term 2 idea January 14, 2007

Well building on my light piano idea I am going to use the sensor I made for that and arrange them on a surface (yet to be determined). Assign each one to a note allow the user to make shapes on the surface to produce music motifs then arrange those shapes into a musical score. This would solve my battery and testing issues without totally abandoning my original idea. Another idea I had based around this would be to use the sensors placed on the surface and with the used of a light source over the surface producing different musiccall effect depending on the amount of sensors and localtion of the affected sensors. These are the ideas I have been considering over the holiday peroid I know just have to discuss them with Dan to make sure I am heading in the right direction.

I have just about survived the holiday with minimal internet access, and hav managed to do a surprising amount of work. I am particularly excited about filming my 4D this Sunday, my brother and I have been working on a film project over the holidays and it seems to have furthered my passion for film making. I have made sure all my costumes are the right size and made all my amends and packed them up already to take them back to Plymouth. I have been looking into different peripherals i could use for my sound project so I can do some decent testing of my idea without hemeraging cash for batteries. My project idea is going well I just have to talk to Dan and the guys in the electronics lab about the possibilties of making the thing (I do have a simple back up plan if this proves to not be possible) The dissertation is going well I am making great progress i have collected all my information and have nearly completed the sample chapter ready for its deadline. As crazy as it sounds I am really looking forwards this term where all my ideas from the first term are  finally becomning reality!

I had a sudden burst of inspiration when my mum showed me a novelty reindeer hat for her phone that someone at work gave her. It is triggered by sending or receiving a mobile signal therefore technically I should be able to utalise this circuit board and some how fuse it with the electronics from a trigger airfreshner.. “technically!” lol
I don’t know what the practiacllities are yet so I’m going to show Mike my Project Tutor my ideas this week and see what he thinks.

I went to the Lab Friday night to see if my creation would work. After a huge struggle getting it from a top floor flat and squeezing it into the car (It only just fitted in) I managed to get it to the lab in one piece.
Now the moment of truth.

I connected all my sensors up turn on all the lasers and ran the patch and everything works. I videoed it just incase there was a problem on tuesday. However that mac didnt have additional just the internal one which was a bit quite so I am going to have to get some speakers attched on tuesday.

A few other things I need to sort
Need to buy more batteries as the ones I have are pretty much dead now :S
Also some of my lasers died not sure if it is the battery or the lasers but I have bought two more lasers and am going hunting for batteries tommorrow morning before heading to the lab to make a few spare sensors.
It was a bit fiddle aligning the lasers with the light sensor as the light sensors are so small but once I have secured the sensors properly it should be ok.

I have just finished writting version 3 of my patch with the capability of pitch changing with 2 additional lasers. Now all that is left is to do is collect all my documentation together, the research behind the ideas, the sketches of my objects, my problem list and my patch deisgns.

Fingers crossed everything will go fine on Tuesday ^^

I managed to make my basic patch last weekend and I have it all working with my sensors and lasers which is really exciting. All my sensors have been ordered and shuold arrive on Monday so I’ll have a long day of soldering ahead of me. I went to homebase and BQ Wednesday night and stocked up on tools and materials to build my casing for the project so hopefully I will have a majority of it done this weekend and finish it off monday when my sensor will be finished^^
Now I have my safety net of do something that does something I am trying to add to the functionality I am trying to figure out how to transpose the scale up and down with the use of two additional beams so I dont limit my musical range to just 12 notes.

Smelling Emails?! November 17, 2006

I can’t believe what I found when browsing the net, there soon will be a device avaliable for £250 that will allow you to add scents to your emails :S

E-mail tries out a sense of smell

You could soon be able to spice up your e-mails with your favourite perfume.
UK net provider Telewest Broadband is testing a system to let people to send aromatic e-mails over the internet. It has developed a kind of hi-tech air freshener that plugs into a PC and sprays a smell linked to the message. Telewest say it could be used by supermarkets to tempt people with the smell of fresh bread or by holiday companies seeking to stir up images of sun-kissed beaches. “This could bring an extra whiff of realism to the internet,” said Chad Raube, director of internet services at Telewest Broadband. “We are always looking at ways to enhance the broadband internet experience of the future and this time we are sure consumers will come up smelling of roses.” Emotional response The technology behind the idea was originally developed by US company Trisenx. Scientists at Telewest’s labs in
Woking,
Surrey, have built on that research to come up with the idea of a “scent dome”.

The dome comes with a cartridge containing 20 basic aromas, which can be combined to produce up to 60 different smells. A “scented e-mail” would contain electronic signals that would tell the dome to release the smell of flowers, perfume or coffee. “Our sense of smell is directly connected to our emotions,” said anthropologist Kate Fox, director of the Social Issues Research Centre in
Oxford. “Smells trigger very powerful and deep-seated emotional responses, and this additional element to the internet will enhance users’ online experience by adding that crucial third dimension.” But the chance to sniff your e-mails not may come cheap. Telewest says its “scent dome” could cost around £250 and would only work with a high-speed, broadband connection.
